Maintaining Plant Integrity: A Practical Steelwork Checklist
Structural failures rarely happen suddenly. Here is what to inspect, how often, and when to call a fabricator.
Start with the load paths
Walk the structure and follow the load from the roof or equipment down to the foundations. Deformed bracing, elongated bolt holes and buckled cleats are early signals that load is not travelling where the original design intended.
Watch the coating, not just the steel
Coating breakdown is the visible early stage of section loss. Blistering, undercutting and rust bleed around connections deserve attention long before the steel itself looks compromised.
Log the small repairs
A repair register turns isolated fixes into a pattern. Three plate repairs in the same transfer point over two years is a design conversation, not a maintenance one.
Plan fabrication before the shutdown
The most expensive hour of a shutdown is the one spent waiting for steel. Measuring and fabricating replacement components ahead of the window turns a repair into a bolt-up.
